Tsk. This won't do at all, you know. Last week, you should have been scarifying and aerating. This week, you should be top dressing. Get to it this instant.
(I should add that I have never done any of the above, and wouldn't know where to start. I leave such technical matters to Him Outdoors.)
Posted by mike at September 22, 2006 10:28 AMMike: the only thing scarified or aerated round here is me. Trust moi.
Posted by robin at September 22, 2006 11:56 AMBuy a house that has a lawnless garden.
Like meeeeee!!!
Posted by Pete at September 22, 2006 03:18 PMit's easy for me as each time i beg (nag ? moi ?) Q to mow the lawn i find it not done. so i get out the lawnmower and start the job myself. it DOES kill my back and there's nothing more than Q wants is me with a very, very sore back. i get grumpy, you see.
so he does it. easy.
another option, if you happen to live in belgium is wait till sunday when you can say that you can't mow lawns on the sabbath. for that is true.
Posted by zed at September 23, 2006 12:58 PMPete: you lucky. lucky man. Or maybe just sensible.
Zed: Belgium is clearly underrated. Especially at weekends.
Posted by robin at September 23, 2006 05:25 PM"So one man went to mow and he hacked and scraped away. The turf seemed to come up in little lumps, almost as if I'd given the poor lawn goose-bumps."
It's clearly a shaving irritation. Try moisturising.
My approach used to be to mow three times a year: May, July and September. I've modified that in recent times and now I babysit frequently for my brother-in-law (always a pleasure) and he mows our lawn (always a greater pleasure).
Posted by Hg at September 23, 2006 11:41 PMLike the extended extended metaphor there, Hg.
May and September sounds good, too.
Posted by robin at September 24, 2006 10:12 AMWe have been asked many things at Sisterly Advice, but never questions regarding caring for the yard. And sad to say, we would not have been much help. I shamefully admit that my 70 year-old uncle comes to mow my yard bi-weekly. Might I add, that my yard looks like a ninety year-old man is caring for it. But alas I have not the desire to prune myself, or the heart to replace my dear ole uncle.
Posted by Sisterly Advice at September 24, 2006 07:04 PMDear Sisterly Advice,
ON NO ACCOUNT PRUNE YOURSELF!!! You are just fine the way you are.
Posted by robin at September 24, 2006 09:44 PMI do not understand what your children are for, if they do not mow the lawn on demand.
